The lungs have a self-cleaning process, but there are several things you can do to help them perform at their best.
Controlled coughing exerts just enough effort to loosen and transport mucus through the airways without narrowing and collapsing them.
- Place your feet on the floor and sit on a chair or on the edge of your bed.
- Lean forward gently. Relax. Fold your arms across your belly button.
- Slowly inhale through your nose.
- Exhale slowly while bending forward and pressing your arms towards your tummy.
- Cough 2-3 times with your mouth slightly open (in short and sharp coughs).
- The initial cough loosens and pushes the mucus through the airways.
- The second and third coughs allow you to cough up and out the phlegm.
- Remove mucus from the lungs. This technique may enhance breathing and aid in the treatment or prevention of lung infections.
For many years, steam inhalation has been a popular therapy for colds and coughs. After the lungs have been exposed to pollutants of any type, mucus can accumulate in the lungs to trap bacteria and pathogens, contributing to the sensation of chest congestion, obstruction, and heaviness. Steam treatment, also known as steam inhalation, involves breathing water vapour to expand the airways and aid in the drainage of mucus from the lungs.
The flooding of the lungs or airways with mucus is simply the body’s inflammatory (defensive) response to infections, allergies, or injuries. Inflammation of the airways can make breathing difficult and generate a heavy, congested feeling in the chest. Consuming anti-inflammatory foods can help to lower inflammation and so alleviate these symptoms.
Cook with raw (fresh bulbs) or dried-powdered turmeric, and eat plenty of leafy greens, cherries, blueberries, olives, walnuts, beans, lentils, and so on.
